Cooking is a fundamental life skill, and at New Leaf, it holds a central place in our program. Our fully equipped kitchen, which includes a small oven, enables students to engage in a wide range of cooking and baking activities. They learn to prepare both everyday meals and special festive treats.
Everyday Meals: Students are taught to make a variety of daily food items, including tea, different types of salads, vegetables, curries, and popular snacks like bhel and ragda pattice. They also learn to use a pressure cooker to make rice and dal. On the baking side, students prepare items such as biscuits, cakes, pattices, khari, and pizza bases. Most of these are consumed within the center.
Festive Treats: Special delicacies such as Diwali snacks and homemade chocolates are prepared for festivals. These items are made to order and sold to both individual customers and corporate clients.
Students participate in every step of the process—from selecting and measuring ingredients to weighing, packaging, and labeling finished products. They are also responsible for cleaning utensils and organizing the kitchen after use. This hands-on involvement fosters a strong sense of ownership and responsibility.
Beyond cooking skills, the activity helps build essential cognitive abilities. Students practice measuring in liters, grams, and kilograms, and they learn to count, weigh, and calculate prices during packaging. Following recipes and instructions enhances their listening, comprehension, and execution skills.
Many students also try out the recipes at home, reinforcing their learning and often gaining recognition and appreciation from their families, which boosts their confidence and self-worth.
